1. The hot pressing temperature is too high

If the temperature of the hot press is set too high, it will cause a significant increase in the shrinkage rate of the wood veneer. When wood veneer loses water rapidly at high temperatures, its internal structure changes, which in turn generates significant internal stress. When this internal stress exceeds the wood veneer's own tolerance limit, cracking will follow. For instance, if the hot-pressing temperature is maintained at 120℃ for a long time, which is far beyond the suitable range, the probability of wood veneer cracking will increase significantly. ​

2. The hot pressing time is too long

Too long a hot pressing time is also not conducive to the bonding of wood veneers. Long-term hot pressing will cause the wood veneer to continuously shrink. Excessive shrinkage damages the fiber structure of the wood veneer, depriving it of its original flexibility and strength, and eventually leading to cracking. For instance, a regular wood veneer that originally only takes 2 minutes to be hot-pressed is highly likely to crack due to excessive shrinkage if the hot-pressing time is extended to 5 minutes. ​

3. The temperature display of the hot press is inaccurate

Once the temperature display system of the hot press malfunctions, on-site staff will misjudge the hot pressing time and temperature. They operate the hot press based on incorrect temperature display, which may lead to hot pressing according to normal parameters when the temperature is too high or too low, or make mistakes in controlling the hot pressing time. This undoubtedly greatly increases the risk of wood veneer cracking. For instance, if the temperature is displayed as 80℃ but the actual temperature is as high as 100℃, and the staff carry out hot pressing without knowing it, it is very likely to cause the wood veneer to crack. ​

4. Issues with wood veneer or glue

On the one hand, the quality condition of the wood veneer itself is of vital importance. If the wood veneer is too thin, its ability to resist changes in external stress will be weak, and it is prone to cracking due to uneven force during the hot pressing process. Furthermore, if the wood veneer itself has minor cracking defects when purchased, the hot pressing process will further expand the cracks. On the other hand, the selection and use of glue should not be ignored either. If substandard glue is used, the adhesive force cannot meet the requirement of a firm bond between the wood veneer and the base material. Or if there is insufficient or uneven application of glue during the gluing process, a stable and reliable connection between the wood veneer and the base material cannot be formed. In the subsequent use process, the wood veneer is prone to cracking from these weak links. ​

1. Reasonably control the hot pressing temperature

Appropriately reducing the temperature of the hot press is a crucial step to prevent the wood veneer from cracking. Generally speaking, it is recommended to control the hot pressing temperature within the range of 70℃ to 95℃. Within this temperature range, the wood veneer can not only fully blend with the glue and firmly adhere to the base material, but also minimize the shrinkage and cracking problems caused by excessively high temperatures to the greatest extent. However, different types of wood veneer and glue have varying sensitivities to temperature. In actual operation, minor adjustments can be made according to specific circumstances. ​

2. It is recommended to give priority to using quick-drying glue, as this helps to shorten the hot pressing time.

For most regular wood veneers, the best hot-pressing time is controlled at 1 to 3 minutes. Of course, some special materials or thicknesses of wood veneers may require special treatment. If the hot-pressing time has to be extended due to actual conditions, the hot-pressing temperature needs to be reduced accordingly to balance the shrinkage degree of the wood veneer during the hot-pressing process and reduce the risk of cracking. For instance, when the hot pressing time is extended to 5 minutes, the hot pressing temperature can be appropriately reduced to around 70℃. ​

3. Regularly inspect and maintain the hot press

To ensure the accuracy of the temperature display of the hot press, it is necessary to carry out regular maintenance on it. It is recommended to regularly use a professional thermometer to measure the actual temperature of the hot-pressed steel plate and compare it with the temperature displayed by the hot-press machine. If any deviation is found between the two, the temperature display system of the hot press should be calibrated or repaired in a timely manner.
