A Comprehensive Guide to Preventing Cracking and Adhesive Penetration in Hot-Pressed Veneer, a must-have for Furniture Factories!

In the production of custom furniture, the hot-pressing wood veneer process can endow furniture with natural textures and a high-end feel. However, the problem of wood veneer cracking often troubles manufacturers - some crack immediately during hot-pressing, while others become apparent after subsequent painting. In fact, as long as the causes are accurately identified and the right methods are used, it can be effectively avoided.

I. Four Major Culprits of Wood Veneer Cracking

1. Excessively high hot pressing temperature: High temperatures will cause the wood veneer to lose water rapidly, with a sudden increase in shrinkage rate. When the internal stress exceeds the tolerance limit, it will crack. For instance, if the temperature remains above 120℃ for a long time, the probability of cracking will increase significantly.

2. Excessive hot pressing time: The continuous shrinkage of the wood veneer will damage the fiber structure and cause it to lose its flexibility. For instance, if the hot pressing of regular wood veneer exceeds the time limit (from 2 minutes to 5 minutes), it is very likely to crack due to excessive shrinkage.

3. Inaccurate equipment temperature: A malfunction in the temperature display of the hot press can lead to misjudgment. For instance, if it shows 80℃ but is actually 100℃, operating with incorrect parameters will significantly increase the risk of cracking.

4. Material inherent issues: If the wood veneer is too thin or has minor flaws, it is prone to uneven force distribution during hot pressing. Non-compliant glue, insufficient or uneven application of glue can cause unstable connection between the wood veneer and the base material, leading to cracking at weak points.

Ii. Practical Solutions

Temperature control is crucial: The recommended conventional hot pressing temperature is 70-95℃, which can not only ensure the bonding and adhesion of the glue but also reduce shrinkage and cracking. Different wood veneers and glues have different sensitivities to temperature and require flexible fine-tuning.

2. The timing must be precise: Prioritize the use of quick-drying glue to shorten the hot pressing time. For regular wood veneer, control it within 1 to 3 minutes. If it is necessary to extend the time, the temperature balance shrinkage should be reduced. For example, when pressing for 5 minutes, the temperature should be adjusted to around 70℃.

3. Regular maintenance of equipment: Regularly use professional thermometers to measure the actual temperature of hot-pressed steel plates, compare it with the equipment display, and calibrate and repair in a timely manner to avoid cracking due to misjudgment of temperature.

4. Leverage professional experience: A professional team deeply involved in the industry can customize process plans based on the material of the wood veneer and the characteristics of the base material, precisely solving cracking problems and enhancing production efficiency.

5. Choose the right glue: Give priority to glue with a solid content of over 40%, as it has strong adhesive force. The eco-friendly one-component adhesive is easy to use, ensuring uniform and stable application of the adhesive and reducing potential risks.

Iii. Suggested Methods for Glue

For hot-pressing wood veneer adhesive, we recommend using the GW-6528A hot-pressing wood veneer adhesive from Fushen. This type of adhesive can significantly reduce the occurrence of blue yellowing, cracking, glue penetration, bubbling, and edge lifting of wood veneer.

GW-6528A zero-formaldehyde single-component glue, when hot-pressed at a temperature of generally 80 to 90 degrees, only takes 2 to 3 minutes. It has extremely high thermal strength, and the wood veneer is not prone to cracking, glue penetration or bubbling.
